Every fitness coach has heard some version of it: "I just have a slow metabolism," "I'm big-boned," "I can't build muscle — it doesn't run in my family." Sometimes these things are said with genuine frustration. Sometimes they're said with a kind of relief, like finally having a reason that sticks.

Here's where we land on this at Katherine Mason Fitness: genetics are real, they matter, and pretending everyone starts from the same biological baseline is both scientifically inaccurate and kind of patronizing. But — and this is a big but — the gap between what genetics actually limits and what people blame genetics for is enormous. And that gap is where most people are quietly losing years of progress.

Let's talk about what's real, what's myth, and how to train smart within whatever hand you were dealt.

What Genetics Actually Influences (For Real)

First, let's give credit where it's due. Your DNA does shape your fitness journey in some meaningful ways.

Muscle fiber composition is one of the clearest examples. Everyone has a mix of fast-twitch and slow-twitch muscle fibers, but the ratio varies quite a bit from person to person. If you're naturally skewed toward slow-twitch fibers, endurance sports may feel more intuitive, while explosive power takes more deliberate work — and vice versa. You can develop both types through training, but your starting point isn't random.

Skeletal structure is another legitimate factor. Hip width, limb length, torso proportions — these all affect how your body performs certain movements. A person with longer femurs is going to squat differently than someone with shorter legs. That's not an excuse; it's just biomechanics. Ignoring it leads to injury. Respecting it leads to smart programming.

Hormonal baselines also matter. Natural testosterone levels, thyroid function, cortisol response — these vary between individuals and between sexes, and they influence everything from recovery speed to fat distribution to how quickly you respond to a new training stimulus. This is real and worth acknowledging.

VO2 max ceiling — your body's maximum capacity to use oxygen — has a genetic component. Elite endurance athletes are often born with an unusually high ceiling. You can absolutely raise your own VO2 max through training, but there's a point where the returns diminish based on your individual physiology.

None of this means you're stuck. It means you're working with a specific set of variables, and the smarter you train, the more you get out of them.

Where the Myth Takes Over

Here's where it gets uncomfortable — because a lot of what gets labeled "genetics" is actually something else entirely.

"I have a slow metabolism" is one of the most overused phrases in American fitness culture. True metabolic disorders are relatively uncommon. What's far more common is a combination of underestimating caloric intake, overestimating caloric burn, and a long history of yo-yo dieting that has affected muscle mass over time. Metabolism is largely a function of muscle mass, activity level, and consistency — all things you can influence.

"I'm just not built to be lean" often means: I haven't found an approach that works sustainably for my life, my stress levels, my sleep, and my relationship with food. That's a real problem worth solving — but genetics usually isn't the core of it.

"Building muscle is impossible for my body type" is almost universally false. Muscle fiber recruitment, progressive overload, adequate protein, sufficient sleep — these principles work across body types. The timeline and the ceiling differ. The process doesn't.

The honest question to ask yourself is this: have I genuinely applied consistent, well-designed effort over a long enough period to conclude that biology is the limiting factor? For most people, the answer is no. And that's okay — but it's worth being honest about.

The Compassionate-But-Direct Take

This isn't about shaming anyone. Life is complicated. Stress, injury, family obligations, financial limitations, mental health — all of these affect your fitness journey in ways that have nothing to do with effort or willpower. Those are real constraints too, and they deserve respect.

But there's a difference between a real constraint and a story. Real constraints require adaptation and problem-solving. Stories require examination.

If you've been telling yourself a genetic story for a while, it might be worth sitting with a few questions: When did I start believing this? Did someone tell me it, or did I conclude it from limited experience? Have I actually tested it with a smart, consistent approach — or did I try something for a few weeks, not see dramatic results, and connect those dots to biology?

Training Smart Within Your Biology

The goal isn't to fight your genetics. It's to understand them well enough to work with them.

If you recover slowly, that's programming information — build in more rest. If your joints feel best with certain movement patterns, honor that. If you've noticed your body responds better to higher volume or lower volume, to more carbs or fewer, to morning training or evening training — that's your biology talking, and it's worth listening to.
